Proper preparation is the foundation of a successful cable pull. Before using your fiberglass duct rodder, complete these essential checks:
Survey the duct route: Know the total length, number of bends, and any obstacles in the conduit
Clean the duct: Remove debris, water, or obstructions that could impede the rod's passage
Verify duct size: Confirm the duct inner diameter is compatible with your rodder size
Check the rodder: Inspect the fiberglass rod for cracks, splinters, or damage before deployment
Lubricate if needed: Apply a light silicone lubricant to reduce friction in the duct
1 Set up the reel at the entry point
Position the duct rodder reel at the entrance of the conduit. Ensure the reel rotates freely and the rod feeds smoothly without kinking at the entry point.
2 Feed the rod into the duct
Insert the rod tip into the duct opening. Maintain steady, even pressure as you feed the rod through. Let the rod's flexibility navigate bends naturally — do not force it.
3 Navigate bends and junctions
When encountering bends, rotate the rod gently while applying forward pressure. The flexible FRP material will follow the duct contour. At junction boxes, ensure the rod tip exits cleanly before continuing.
4 Advance to the exit point
Continue feeding until the rod tip exits at the destination point. This may take several minutes for long runs. If resistance increases suddenly, stop and investigate.
5 Secure the leader attachment
At the exit point, attach the steel leader or pulling hook to the rod tip. This provides a secure connection point for your cable.

Use a second operator: One person feeds while another monitors the exit point
Apply pulling lubricant: Especially critical for runs over 50 meters or with multiple bends
Avoid exceeding bend radius: Most FRP rodders have a minimum bend radius of 150-300mm — exceeding this risks rod damage
Monitor pull tension: Use a tension meter when available to avoid cable damage
Pace the pull: Fast pulling generates heat and friction; steady pulling is more effective

Stop immediately. Common causes: duct obstruction, tight bend, or duct collapse. Retract slightly, apply lubricant, and try again. If unsuccessful, use a duct camera to inspect.
Replace the tip immediately. A damaged tip will catch on joints and make further progress impossible. Most quality rodders have replaceable tips.
Apply pulling lubricant at the entry point and along the duct. Consider using a wire mesh cage to distribute cable weight in long runs.
